We further express our thankfulness to those who extended their generosity by donating to the Springs Rescue Mission through our Protein for Helping Others initiative. Your decision to support this initiative has made a significant difference. This year, thanks to your contributions, we were able to donate over 5,500 pounds of healthy protein, totaling 53 lots, with a monetary value of nearly $9,000. This is more than double the donation we made in 2023, a testament to the incredible support and compassion of our community.
With Sincere Appreciation,

Protein for Helping Others (P4HO)
El Paso County Junior Livestock Sale Committee's strategic partnership with CSU Extension, Protein for Helping Others (P4HO) and Springs Mission provides the opportunity to impact our community by bringing agriculture, youth development and civic engagement together.
How the partnership works:
o The youth exhibitors who raise market animals are learning how to raise food
that is wholesome and nutritious. Caring for and feeding the animals teaches
tremendous responsibility and life skills as they learn about the food chain.
o The youth also benefit from public speaking, critical thinking, and decision-
making skills that give them an advantage later in life, particularly when
interviewing for jobs and entering the work force.
o The Junior Livestock Sale is an opportunity for youth exhibitors to sell the
animals they have prepared for market. Buyers supporting the Junior Livestock
Sale purchase the animals at a premium over the typical market price. The buyer
can retain the animal for their own consumption or place the animal on what is
called “buyback.” When placed on buyback, the buyer pays the difference
between the market price of the animal and the bid amount, which is referred to
the “premium.”
o As a part of our strategic partnership, the P4HO organization raises
sponsorships/donations to cover the market price (buyback amount) and
associated processing fees for market animals designated as buyback at the
Junior Livestock Sale at the El Paso County Fair.
o Meat purchased with the P4HO funds is donated to the Springs Mission.
o Springs Mission utilizes the meat to prepare and serve meals, which totaled over
200,000 last year.
o Not only do the donations provide needed food (protein), but the Mission also
uses the whole carcasses to teach culinary skills. Thereby developing job skills to
allow individuals to pursue employment opportunities.
o Youth members see the food product they raised having a direct impact on the
local community and providing much needed protein for those served by the
Springs Mission.
